Scope and policy    

Propósitos y Representaciones, Journal of Educational Psychology of the Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola, has the objective of becoming a plural forum for the dissemination of knowledge that is produced in research among academics, researchers, teachers and university students, with a perspective that privileges diversity of topics, disciplinary approaches, theoretical approaches and methodological proposals.

Propósitos y Representaciones is a bilingual journal that publishes scientific articles in Spanish and English language. Since 2019 mantain a four-monthly periodicity (3 issues per year); the first between January and April, the second between May and August, and the third between September and December. Currently is under the direction of the Psychology Department of the Faculty of Health Sciences - USIL.

Instructions by article categories



Propósitos y Representaciones publishes five types of sections:

  • Editorial, requested by the Editor, its content refers to a topic of interest according to the editorial policy or to the published articles in the current issue of the journal.
  • Research articles, empirical contributions with theoretical sustenance, are texts that present the original results of research projects; analytical reports of interventions through evaluation, systematization of experiences or case studies, with the use of references to other interventions and conceptual debate. The text may not exceed 25 pages or be less than 15 pages (including references and annexes). Research articles must include the next sections: (i) introduction, (ii) method, (iii) results, (iv) discussion; and, (v) references.
  • Review articles, analysis, systematization and integration of results of research (published and unpublished) about a field of knowledge, topic or problem, with the purpose to establishing states of knowledge about them. Articles must include a relevant and updated bibliography. The text may not exceed 30 pages or be less than 10 pages. Research articles must include the next sections: (i) introduction, (ii) argumentation, (iii) conclusions; and, (iv) references.
  • Comments, include thematic reviews, methodological or book reviews. Thematic reviews are understood as the analysis and discussion of a short and current bibliography (last 5 years) about a specific topic. Methodological reviews are the review and comment of the adaptation or adoption of an innovative methodological proposal (last 5 years). Book reviews to present publications with important contributions (maximum one year of publication). For this section, the text must not exceed 8 pages. .
  • Obituaries, comment of a news about a recently deceased personage, whose contribution is linked to the theme of the journal. The obituary must respond to the recognition, contribution, public transcendence and the meaning of the person’s life.
Form and preparation of manuscripts



Articles that are proposed for publication in the journal will be written respecting the following guidelines:

1. The manuscript is written on A4-sized paper. All type of the manuscript must be typewritten and one and a half spaced, in Word, font Arial and font size 11. Margins must 3 cm on all sides and with vertical aligned. In addition, for citation and references must be followed APA Standards, 7th Edition.

2. The author’s names (first full name, the initial of the second name and the first surname) go after the title, with institutional affiliation and ORCID iD. Numbering must be placed as a superscript leading to a footnote, it must indicate the professional training and / or specialty, position and email address.

3. The manuscript must include two abstracts, one in Spanish and the other in English. Abstract must have an extension between 150 and 250 words. At the end of each abstract you must include as minimum 5 keywords, both Spanish and English. The abstracts will be written in a single paragraph.

4. Recognition and information about academic and financial aid received for the preparation of the article should be included in the final document as supplementary notes.

5. The five levels of headings correspond to the APA editorial style in its seventh version, as it appears in the following table:





Centered, in bold, capital and small letters
             Alinea  Left-aligned text, in bold, capital and small letters
     Indentation, in bold, capital and small letters, full stop
       Indentation, in bold, italics, capital and small letters, full stop.
       Indentation, italics, capital and small letters, full stop, no in bold.

*They must not have numbering.

6. Footnotes must be minimal and indispensable. They must have only explanatory character and not present bibliography.

7. The numbering must be in letters up to 9 and in numbers from 10. Tables or figures, years, ages, weights, measures, percentages, numbers with decimals, etc. will always go in numbers.

8. Preferably, the tables and figures must be original. In case of using other sources, the origin must be clearly indicated and proof of having received express authorization for publication. Tables and figures must be inserted immediately after having been referred. Titles must clearly explain their meaning. The APA style will be used, with titles and correlative numbering.

Citation and bibliographical references style



The form to quote corresponds to the editorial style APA in its seventh version. Below are three examples with the most common forms:

  • Carrasco (2007), with a multi-level study (student, classroom, school) about a segment of the PISA 2000 database, he find that...
  • In the study it was found that among the determinants of performance for the area of text comprehension, the variables that seem to be most influential are the proportion of non-repeating students in the school and attendance at initial education (Beltrán & Seinfeld, 2011)..
  • It is possible to maintain that "the results of the national and international evaluations show that the bulk of the school population of our country, and its similar ones in the Latin American region, does not meet the standards required in basic learning competences" (Miranda, 2008, p. 11).

The other possible ways to quote (e.g., institution as author or electronic book) are subject to the same standard.

References also correspond to the APA editorial style in its seventh version. Here are four examples with the most common references:

The other possible forms of reference (e.g., book of various authors, book chapter, electronic book or others) are subject to the same standard.

Sending of manuscripts    
  Articles must be original and unpublished research, which are not in the process of arbitration in other journals. The contents of all articles are the sole responsibility of the authors. Propósitos y Representaciones receives all manuscript submissions electronically via its platform, you must register as a user at the following address The use of this resource allows to track the status of the manuscript.

In either case, you must attach a statement of originality and your resume with indication of institutional affiliation and emails.

Authors must designate a correspondence author, who may not necessarily be the main author, with which the Editor will maintain constant communication during the process of arbitration and publication of the manuscript.
